About the Nokia 6700 Slide

The Nokia 6700 Slide is the latest 'non-smartphone' Nokia running on the S60 operating system. This operating system is traditionally used in all Nokia Nseries and Eseries handsets, but Nokia have a clear focus on bringing smartphone technology to a wider audience, who are perhaps slightly put off by the marketing of such devices. So, whilst the 6700 Slide has the facility to add features to the phone in exactly the same way you can on a smartphone device, you won't often hear of that feature being talked about. The idea being, as the 'ordinary' mobile phone user becomes more accustomed to the S60 layout, the more likely they will be to 'upgrade' to a real smartphone.

The 6700 Slide is a good size and weight for a mobile phone, measuring 95 x 46 x 16mm, and weighing in at just 110g. The screen is a bright, crisp, 16 million colour TFT display, QVGA resolution but a bit on the small side at just 2.2 inches. The phone slides up to reveal a traditional 12 key alphanumeric keypad, whilst underneath the display is a large 5-way D-Pad, flanked by 6 other keys; two soft option keys directly underneath the display, followed by a home key on one side and a cancel button on the other, with finally a send/end call key.

One of the stand-out features of the 6700 slide is the camera, a 5.0 Megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, and Carl Zeiss lens, which added together should equal some pretty impressive snaps. Although the quality of the camera isn't in doubt, for what it offers, I still can't help feeling a little underwhelmed, it seems as if the 5.0 Megapixel/Carl Zeiss Lens/LED flash combination is about as far as Nokia can go with cameras, it has become the default for so many of their devices these days. Whilst other manufacturers can offer 8.0 or 12.0 Megapixel, and features like Best Shot, Face and Smile detection, Nokia just keep churning out the same old thing.

Media does feature well on the 6700 Slide, with the media player supporting a whole host of formats, such as MP3, WMA, WAV, RA, AAC and M4A for music plus MP4, RV, WMV and 3GP for video. A good line up, but native DivX or XviD wouldn't go amiss. The handset only offers 45MB internal memory, not much for a modern day mobile device, thankfully there is a slot for memory card expansion, with the 6700 able to operate with 16GB MicroSD cards. There is also a stereo FM radio which is a useful option to have, but disappointingly the phone has a 2.5mm audio jack, so unless you invest in a suitable adaptor you will be restricted to the Nokia headset the device ships with for music playback.

The 6700 Slide is a capable web browsing device; the standard S60 web browser has always been one of the best on the market, and as we know the OS is S60, you can also take advantage of either Opera Mini or the full Opera S60 browser. The phone supports HSPA web browsing, with up to 10.2Mbps downloads and 2Mbps uploads supported. EDGE, HSCSD and GPRS are all included.
